A commissioned knife begins in that gap, where a rough idea meets a maker's hands. Nothing on this page is pulled from a shelf: every custom piece is built to your specifications, hand-forged by our own smiths in our forge, then finished, inspected and shipped to you from our Texas facility.
A production knife is engineered for averages, for a use nobody specified. A custom knife is tailored to one owner's intent: grip circumference, edge geometry, blade steel, handle material, the finish. The style follows the hand, not the marketing photograph. That is the whole difference, and it shows up years later rather than at checkout.

How the Custom Order Process Works
- Tell us the purpose. Not the steel — the purpose. Who carries it, what it cuts, what it has to survive. A chef knife and a karambit demand completely different builds, and every specification downstream follows from this one answer.
- Share your idea. Email a description, rough sketches, or reference photos: intended size, steel preference, handle material, and any engraving. Crude sketches clarify proportion faster than paragraphs of description. Images can be jpg, png, gif or pdf.
- Get your quote. We reply within 1–2 business days with a price, a confirmed delivery window inside our standard 15–30 days, and honest suggestions from the smiths. If what you've drawn won't balance or won't hold an edge, we'll say so before you pay anything.
- Approve and confirm. Once you approve the quote and make the starting payment, your slot on the bench is booked and steel is cut for your build specifically.
- We forge it. Forging, grinding, heat treatment, fit and finish. You receive progress photos between stages and a final approval photo before your blade is packed and shipped to your door.

What We Can Make
Ask ten customers what they want and you'll get ten answers. We forge custom hunting and bushcraft knives, chef and kitchen knives, EDC folders and pocket knives, karambits, daggers and athames cut with symbols for ritual work, and swords and legend-inspired replica blades. Axes, choppers, fishing and tactical builds share the same bench. There is no fixed size limit: tell us the blade length, overall length and weight you want, and we will tell you honestly whether it will balance in the hand before you pay.
Blade Steel
Steel choice starts with an honest answer about use, not with a catalogue. Tell us the steel you want and we confirm in writing that we can source and work it, and at what price, before any money moves. Damascus and D2 are what we forge most; high-carbon tool steels bite hard and sharpen easily but want maintenance, while stainless buys corrosion resistance for a little more work on the stones. If you name a premium steel we cannot get, we will tell you rather than substitute quietly. Choose steel first — everything cosmetic follows that decision.
Damascus Patterns
Damascus is priced with the build rather than as a fixed add-on, because layer count, billet size and pattern all move the number. Pick twist, ladder, raindrop, feather, explosion mosaic, Turkish, or random pattern — or leave it as maker's choice and let the billet decide. Higher layer counts and mosaic work cost more, and your quote states the exact figure before you commit.
Handle Materials
Handles decide grip and feel more than steel ever will, because your palm judges the handle daily. Micarta, G-10 and carbon fibre are the rugged synthetics we reach for on hard-use builds; they shrug off sweat and weather. Natural wood, stabilised wood and stabilised burl carry warmth. Antler, elk antler and bone suit traditional work, usually with brass or copper fittings. Coloured and cosmic pigment resin photographs beautifully and wears well.
Finishes and Engraving
Blade finishes include satin, stone-wash, antiqued and parkerized. Personalized engraving is included free on every custom order: names, dates, coordinates of a place that matters, quiet symbols, cut into steel or handle at no extra cost. Every piece ships with a sheath matched to the blade, handmade leather or a wooden display sheath, whichever suits the piece. Most blades leave sharpened to 20° inclusive; 15° on request suits slicers.

Custom Knife Pricing and Deposit
Custom knives start at $100. Swords start at $150. From there the price moves with steel, Damascus layer count, handle work and overall size, and heavily detailed pieces are quoted individually. Engraving is free on every custom order. Tell us your real budget in the first email rather than the fifth — it shapes the design conversation and saves everyone time.
Payment is straightforward. Orders up to $150 are paid in full when you approve the quote. Orders above $150 start with $150 to put your build on the bench; we message you for the balance once the piece is finished and photographed, just before it ships. Your start date follows that first payment, not the first email, and every dollar of it goes toward the final price. Once forging begins that starting payment is non-refundable, because the steel has been cut for your build and the bench time is spent.
How Long Does a Custom Knife Take?
Every custom build takes 15 to 30 days, forging through to delivery. That window covers the whole job: design approval, forging, grinding, heat treatment, fit and finish, sharpening, and shipping to your door. Simple pieces land at the shorter end. Damascus, multi-material handles and detailed engraving push toward thirty days.
None of those stages shortcuts well. Forging demands heat cycles. Grinding eats days. Finishing takes as long as it takes, and a rushed heat treat fails its owner years later rather than on the bench. Fifteen to thirty days is what the work actually needs, so that is what we quote, and your exact date is confirmed in writing before you pay anything. That window is door to door, tracked the whole way, with a US address and a US phone number behind it if anything goes wrong.
Anime, Film and Game-Inspired Blades
Collectors ask about animation heroes, game weapons and screen legends almost daily. We build legend-inspired blades that honour a silhouette you love while respecting the intellectual property held by the studios, publishers and artists who created it.
That means no direct copies. A piece inspired by a style — profile, grind, palette — is welcome. An adapted original design is better still. Copyrighted weapons reproduced blade-for-blade stay off the bench entirely, and so do direct copies of another smith's original work.
Physics sets the rest of the limits. Oversized buster swords, scythes, and weapons built purely for camera work don't translate into functional steel. We will build big, but we will tell you first what a design will actually weigh and how it will handle. Everything that leaves our shop is a working tool or a functional blade — no hollow props, no costume steel.
What We Won't Build
A few requests we decline, because they cannot be sold or shipped lawfully in the markets we serve: automatic and switchblade mechanisms, sword canes, disguised or concealed blades, and knuckle-duster guards. Direct blade-for-blade reproductions of copyrighted designs, and copies of another maker's original work, are refused as a matter of policy. Knife laws vary by country and by US state, so please read our age and shipping restrictions before ordering.

How long does a custom knife take?
Every custom build takes 15 to 30 days from approval to delivery, including shipping. Simple pieces finish nearer fifteen days; Damascus, multi-material handles and heavy engraving run toward thirty. Your quote states the exact window before you commit.
Can you copy a design I found online?
Not blade-for-blade. Direct copies of another maker's work or of copyrighted weapons are refused as a matter of policy. What we offer instead is a piece in the same spirit: comparable silhouette, comparable weight in hand, our own original design and our own steel.
Do you take rush orders?
Sometimes. Fifteen days is already close to the floor for honest work — heat treatment, grinding and finishing can't be compressed into a weekend. Tell us your deadline in your first email and we'll say plainly whether we can hit it, or whether a ready-made piece serves you better.
What should I customise first?
Purpose, then steel, then handle material, then finish, then carry, then edge geometry — in that order. Customers routinely reverse it, picking a twist pattern first and then discovering the geometry they actually needed was never compatible with that choice.
Are custom knives worth it?
Value shows up years later, when performance holds steady after the tenth deer or the thousandth dinner service. A cheap production knife gets replaced three times. A commissioned blade built around your hand, in steel chosen for your use, tends not to get replaced at all.
Do you ship custom orders outside the US?
Yes. We take custom commissions worldwide. US orders ship free; international shipping is quoted alongside your build. Knife laws vary by country, so check what can legally be imported where you live before ordering.
Where are Lavish Blade knives made and how fast do they arrive?
Our blades are hand-forged by our own smiths in Pakistan, then finished, inspected and shipped to US customers from our Texas facility. Your finished piece is delivered within 15 to 30 days of approval, US shipping is free, and Lavish Blade LLC in New Caney, Texas handles your order, your returns and your warranty.
